History of BB Cream
What became BB cream was originally formulated in the 1960s in Germany by dermatologist Dr. Christine Schrammek to protect her patients’ skin after facial peels and surgery. It also covers redness after the peels. BB cream stands for blemish balm, blemish base, beblesh balm, and in Western markets, beauty balm. Compared to a tinted cream, which would be just a cream with a very light tint, BB Cream is a foundation, moisturizer, and sunblock skincare product.
The CC cream came later on and describes a Color Correction cream. A CC cream has all the benefits of a BB cream but with the specific feature of homogenizing the coloration of the skin, by correcting the complexion concerns such as redness or dullness.
BB Creams: The Facts You Don’t Know
There’s Not Just A Single Definition. Unfortunately, the term “BB Cream” is pretty nebulous and encompasses a wide range of products. BB creams originated in Germany and exploded in Korea, where they were first used by laser treatment patients to ease post-procedure redness. But now that beauty consumers have embraced BBs, new formulas span a range of shades, textures and skincare benefits.
They’re NOT one shade fits all. Despite what some packages claim, we found a wide range of colors and they don’t all work with every skin tone. You may need to test a few formulas before you find a match.
BBs are best applied with a brush. Just like any complexion makeup, the key to making these tinted balms work is to blend, blend and blend some more. A foundation brush (or a sponge like the Beauty Blender) does the job better than fingers.
Layering brings the best results. Though some BB creams aim to replace your entire arsenal of face products, that’s not always realistic. If your skin is extra dry, you’ll want to prep with moisturizer so your BBs pigment doesn’t stick to dry spots. Also, since most BBs have light to medium coverage, you’ll probably still need concealer for under-eye circles, blemishes, and other discolorations.
My review
When BB cream was introduced in the first time in Korea, it was mainly used in Clinics and Aesthetics. Then Korean Cosmetics companies started to make similar creams. Now there are more than many BB Creams too choose from. For me, BB Cream replaced foundations, Suncreams, Powders, and Cushions.
I have been using professional Aesthetic BB Creams to those of Cosmetic Brands. I feel those professional ones, Schrammek or Alex BB creams have finer texture, moisturizing and better adhesion to the skin. But it feels that they are highly adhesive that pulls dusts and darkens after a while. I tried to cleanse even more carefully. But still, I like Schrammek’s Blemish Balm the best.
Cosmetics Brands BB Creams seem to focus more on the correcting the complexions than protecting the skin I guess. They literally replaced daily use of foundations or cushions. There maybe some differences in tones or colors, but for the coverage, I feel no big differences exist because they cannot completely replace the foundation plus cushion. So I choose to put on a perfect make up or use daily BB cream of any brands that is suitable to your skin tone.
Today, I am introducing one of the cosmetic brands’ BB Cream. Not the department selling brands.
